Live and Learn

Daily Education

Education comes in many different forms. My father died when I was still a child, but I have never forgot his ten rules to living a good life. I still hold his words of wisdom very dear today.

1. An Englishman’s word is his bond. (I have never given my word lightly, and for me to break my word, there has to be a very compelling reason.)
2. Always learn from your mistakes.
3. Civiality will cost you nothing, but will take you a long way.
4. Always know a man before you judge him, for we all make mistakes.
5. Learn something new every day.
6. When you find a word in the dictionary, always read the word above and below.
7. Social etiquette is a must, to live a good life.
8. Fighting never solves anything.
9. Regretting the past will not change events.
10. Help and aid your fellow man.
Though retired, I'm still working as an editor for a poetry/short story magazine.

Hard to see anything wrong with these John, though I maybe prefer the older version of 1 as 'A gentleman's word is his bond ' ?

And in this throw-away disposeable age, the old 'waste not, want not' is still a good rule ?

Reading about the 19 year old boy and his wife, neither working, bringing up 5 children on welfare benefits (and he has another 6 year old daughter also!).
This boy and wife say they are doing fine !
Their poor children will no doubt all copy them when they grow up, believing they are doing fine too.

Maybe not helped by all governments claiming that poverty is fine for children ? I think it is very hard to bring up children to do well in poverty - and almost impossible in non-working families !

Yes Clare, but maybe the new subject that kids have to do from this year will help a bit - 'Citizenship' !!
